HISTORY OF CHAPTER NAME
The name Transylvania comes from Latin and means "across the woods." That name was a good description of the vast, heavily forested region settled by a pioneering land company, whose chief scout was Daniel Boone. This area remained a part of Virginia until Kentucky achieved statehood in 1792, and it still marked the nation's western frontier in 1780 when the college bearing the same name became the sixteenth college in the United States. Transylvania College carries the distinction of being the oldest school west of the Allegheny Mountains.
