ORIGIN OF CHAPTER NAME
This chapter takes its name from Nicholas Mercer, a Virginia native and Revolutionary War patriot who enlisted from South Carolina in the 5th Infantry Regiment on June 6, 1776, and served to the close of the war and advancing to a sergeant. After the war, Nicholas Mercer moved back to Virginia until 1800, and then to Wayne County, Kentucky, where he died in September 1816.
