CHAPTER ORGANIZED MARCH 28, 1940
The Jane Lampton Chapter was organized on March 28, 1940, by Miss Sallie Baker. Our forty member chapter maintains a strong focus on DAR Schools, Patriotism, and Veterans. We also sponsor a Junior American Citizens Club and a Children of the American Revolution Society aptly named the Long Hunters. Our chapter is comprised of a group of intelligent, warm, generous-spirited ladies of all ages. Chapter meetings are held on the third Saturday of the month at 2 p.m. central time in Columbia, Jamestown, and Burkesville on an alternating schedule. Dress is casual. Programs include historical, educational historic preservation, patriotic, government, and special speakers.
The name of the chapter comes from Jane Lampton who was born on June 18, 1803 in Adair County. When Jane was twenty she married attorney John Clemens in Columbia. The Clemens moved from Kentucky to Tennessee, then to Florida and finally Hannibal, Missouri. Jane bore seven children; however her son Samuel Langhorne Clemens readily claimed that his mother had a great influence on his life and often corresponded with her. Jane Lampton Clemens is remembered as a cheerful affectionate and strong woman, with a gift for storytelling. Her son, Samuel, known by his pen name of Mark Twain, was a highly accomplished storyteller.
