CHAPTER ORGANIZED JUNE 12, 1942
Captain John Lillard Chapter NSDAR, Grant County, Kentucky, was authorized on June 12, 1942, with Mrs. Watson Tranter as organizing regent. The chapter was confirmed at the October meeting of the National Board in 1942.
The chapter takes its name from John Lillard, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Lightfoot Lillard. John was born on November 3, 1737, in Culpeper County, Virginia. During the American Revolution he formed, under the direction of George Washington, his own Company known as the "Culpeper Minutemen," and he became its Captain. His wife, Susannah Bell Lillard, was the niece of Mary Bell Washington. She died at the birth of their thirteenth child, David, on November 18, 1782, while in route to the Kentucky District of Virginia. Captain John Lillard died on August 5, 1801, in Mercer County, Kentucky. He is buried on a farm near Harrodsburg.
