THE CHAPTER NAME

Jacob Flournoy was born in October 1760, at Falling Creek, Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was a man of great physical strength, a plantation owner, and known to have raised fine horses. He lived in Chesterfield County until the end of his life on April 17, 1846, at the age of 85.

During the American Revolution, he enlisted from Chesterfield County in the Virginia State Troops on August 19, 1777. He began his enlistment with Lieutenant Thomas Clay and concluded his war service in the Second Virginia State Regiment of Artillery, commanded by Colonel Thomas Marshall. His company commander was Captain Henry Quarles. Flournoy was discharged from service at Richmond, Virginia, on August 22, 1780, after the completion of his three year term of enlistment.

Jacob's daughter, Lucy, who married John Thomas Baldwin Roberts, migrated in 1832 to the vicinity of present Fulton, Kentucky. This couple played a large part in the opening of that portion of the Jackson Purchase to agriculture and industry.
